View the original Victoria gardens at the Saanich Fair

by admin on August 17, 2012

Our community has long been know for its “Victoria gardens”, although the name may be a bit of a misnomer; while the Inner Harbour and downtown Victoria certainly have their gardens, there’s also the world-famous Butchart Gardens out on the Saanich Peninsula, which, technically, isn’t part of Victoria at all.

However, the Victoria region can tie its reputation as a city of gardens to its rich history as a farming community. The colony, after all, got its start as a chartered Hudson’s Bay farm (the area that is now Uplands in south Oak Bay was once a very large corporate farm), and many, many regions were once prime farming country. Gordon Head, for example, was one of the major exporters of holly in the British Empire.

The region’s farming heritage lives on for the most part on the Saanich Peninsula, which of course is just about to celebrate its annual exhibition a couple of weeks from now over the Labour Day long weekend.
